Poppy Seed Dressing – Contentment Cooking

Poppy seed dressing is creamy, tangy, nutty and so satisfying and truly wonderful to put on any salad. Everything is prepared in 5 minutes and you know that this homemade vinaigrette will always be a favorite on your plate. This is seriously the best poppy seed dressing you could ask for and no one can get enough of it in no time.

My friends, this Creamy Poppy Seed Dressing is something I could live without, because it’s not just a dressing to me, it’s a condiment like Ranch Dip, Catalina DressingOr Caesar sauce.

It makes any salad wonderful, it’s creamy, tangy and nutty. I mean, come on, what’s not to like?

What is poppy seed dressing made from?

Poppy Seed Dressing Ingredients:

Vegan mayo is the creamy base of our vinaigrette. This ingredient adds lots of creaminess and a rich body. This is our base and starting point for adding the other ingredients.

Oat milk: I use it to dilute this poppy seed dressing, but you can use any milk. Almond, soy, cashew, it will be excellent any time.

Poppy seeds add a slightly nutty flavor and so delicious. I used them the first time in my Poppy Seed Chicken and from there I know these are just the ticket to an amazing meal.

Olive oil adds a flavorful component to the dressing.

We add vinegar to poppy seed vinaigrette for a tangy flavor, but lemon juice could also do the trick. But after testing the vinegar, it was the clear winner for me.

I use a small amount of mustard to add more flavor to the final result.

Sugar is there to balance out the other tangy and salty flavors. It adds a little sweetness, so good.

Shallots I add texture and chop them very finely before adding them. It has an onion-like flavor that is not as dominant as onions.

How to Make Poppy Seed Dressing

Mix all ingredients

In a bowl, add mayonnaise, milk, oil, poppy seeds, shallots, mustard, vinegar, sugar and a pinch of salt and pepper.

Whisk everything well.

Use immediately or save for later until ready to serve.

Tips and tricks

Leftovers keep well in the refrigerator for about 1 week. This is truly a perfect salad dressing to make ahead of time.

Strawberry and poppy seed salad

As you can see in my step-by-step photos, in the final result I serve my poppy seed vinaigrette over a strawberry salad.

I use romaine lettuce, strawberries and almonds, keeping it very simple. And let me tell you, this proves you can whip up a simple salad in no time. You don’t need fancy ingredients, but you do need a poppy seed dressing that makes any salad wonderful and this really does it.

    You can see in my step by step photos that I am making a strawberry salad. For this I use romaine lettuce, strawberries and almonds. Put some poppy seed dressing on top and you’ll know this simple salad is amazing.
