What’s in a French Taco

You’re probably wondering what those French tacos mean that you can find at many fast food restaurants. Tacos in general are very versatile, you can fill them with whatever you want.

The essential ingredient for these particular tacos are fries, but from there you can use cheese sauce, mayonnaise, mustard, ketchup, barbecue sauce or chili sauce.

You can see that there are no rules, but the preparation is always the same and that sets them apart from other tacos. Once rolled and filled you can use a grill pan like I did or prepare them in the panini press to make nice roast marks and a nice crunch of course.

Why these are the best French tacos

These are simply amazing friends: the taste, texture and flavor, oh my goodness, you will love them as much as I do!

French tacos are so easy to do, but so impressive in flavor: typically for French tacos you have to make a roux which is a béchamel sauce and commonly called white sauce with cheese added to make a cheese sauce. It’s great, but it takes time. Instead, I use vegan mayonnaise and cheese for delicious flavor. This will save a lot of time and make everything faster.

The fries are in there, I think it’s such an amazing ingredient, filling and comforting, adding great texture. And for the kids, who doesn’t like fries?

Versatile: You can use a grill pan, a regular pan or a panini press, whatever you use it will always taste delicious.

I can’t help it and I don’t know about you, but I like a little heat so I add chili powder and smoked paprika.

The crunch and texture fresh from the pan or press seems like it comes from a fine dining restaurant, but then economic and easy to make from scratch.

How to Make French Tacos

Preheat your oven to 400°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Cook your fries according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Prepare the taco meat: heat the olive oil in a pan and add the onions and garlic. Fry for about 2 minutes, then add vegan ground beef and cook for about 4 more minutes. Season with smoked paprika, chili powder and a pinch of salt and pepper. Stir in the black beans, turn off the heat and set aside.

I warm my tortillas for about 20 seconds in the microwave first, because when cold they will break easily when you try to roll them. This extra step is great. You can also use a frying pan or oven.

I use 6 large tortillas: start with chips, then vegan mayonnaise, cheese, taco meat, barbecue sauce and green onions. Tuck in both ends of your tortilla, fold the bottom over. Make sure to use your hands to press the filling inside and finally roll it up tightly.

Heat a grill pan (you don’t need oil), wait until your pan is hot and add your tacos. Cook the French tacos for 1 minute on each side until you have visible grill marks, as you can see in my step-by-step photos.

You can do the same thing in a conventional pan, but the appearance will be streak-free – while remaining delicious and crispy.

Serve immediately, they are so good hot and freezing is not recommended. These are best fresh.

My recipe is ideal for 6 large tortillas, you can use fewer or smaller ones. Remember, whatever tortillas you use, don’t overload them with fillings, as this will cause them to fall apart.
