How to Make Overnight Oatmeal

Overnight oats are an easy, healthy, make-ahead breakfast that’s so easy to customize based on your preferences or flavor cravings!

There are an almost endless amount of ways to flavor your overnight oats, but they generally follow a basic formula of ingredients:

  • Dry oats: I recommend using a 50-50 mix of rolled oats and quick-cooking or instant oats for the perfect texture. Instant oats are a little creamier, while rolled oats provide a hearty texture and chew!
  • Chia seeds: Chia seeds are an excellent source of fiber and heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids. Here we use them to thicken our oatmeal! You can also use ground flaxseed for a similar effect.
  • Sweetener: Maple syrup is my favorite sweetener for overnight oats, but any dry or liquid sweetener will work here. Feel free to adjust the sweetener according to your personal preferences!
  • Dairy-free milk: Overnight oats achieve their perfectly creamy texture by using plant-based milk instead of water.
  • Yogurt: Yogurt is technically optional, but I like to use a little plant-based yogurt in my daily oatmeal recipes because it adds extra “flavor” and makes the mixture even thicker. However, I always include yogurt substitutions in the recipe notes!

What is the best milk for daily oats?

I recommend using a thick, creamy dairy-free milk like oat milk, soy milk, or cashew milk. Almond milk will also work, but I don’t find it as creamy. Soy milk is my favorite and I love that it’s higher in protein too!

What is the best way to store overnight oats?

I prefer to divide my overnight oats into individual portions and store them in mason jars in the refrigerator. Your oatmeal will keep in the refrigerator for up to 5 days!

Are overnight oats gluten free?

Yes – if you are gluten free, use certified gluten free oats to ensure there has been no cross contamination.
